Japantown Was Forever
A vibrant Japantown was reestablished in Sacramento following the closure of the American concentration camps, however that community was demolished in 1957, in the name of development of the Capitol Mall. Today, a handful of businesses have rallied on 10th Street. Osaka-Ya is a family-owned sweets shop that has been in business since the 1960's.
Sacramento was and still is the Tribal land of the Nisen Peoples. Many tribes have gathered throughout this river valley and stewarded this land for generations, including the Miwok/Me-Wuk Peoples, and the Patwin Wintun Peoples.
